Greater cash incentives lead to lower productivity??!

Here at WW we are always keen on learning how to improve processes and constantly hone our techniques to make us more efficient.
We recently came across a video on what actually drives and motivates us (Thanks @Wayne Palmer)
Beyond the amazing animation there is a very interesting message that it almost always takes more than a financial motivation in order to gain the most out of your employees. There is actually scientific proof that beyond menial and manual tasks, there is an indirect correlation between monetary rewards and productivity.
A great example that is referenced on the video is that of open source developers - these guys are producing amazing products (Linux for example) and are not gaining anything from it except a sense of purpose and satisfaction. The really curious thing is that this can be applied to any working practice - as opposed to having a command and control attitude to employees and treating them like pack horses, why not empower them to think for themselves and take control of their own work whilst learning and making continuous improvements?!
Surely this is crazy talk!? But as we examine it, this is what is shown and proven over and over through scientific experiments that have been done all over the world (even by the US Federal Bank!).
In order to realise our full potential we truly must look beyond specifics of working practices and analyse supporting processes and much more importantly how we treat our workers!
