Bike update: Peugeot Competition 300 purchased

Well, after my previous post ranting about the heaviness of my bike and that a hybrid may not be up to scratch I went out and bought myself a new(ish - haha!) bike - a Peugeot Competition 300.

As usual I got carried away with bikes and then went and found myself an ebay 'bargain'. After doing some research on the chainset (Shimano exage 500ex) I found that the bike was probably produced around 1994. This is a good start as at the time Peugeot were a force to be reckoned with and were putting out some pretty decent bikes. I managed to do a deal with the chap and bought the bike for the princely sum of £120.

When I went to collect it, it seemed the wheels were buckled slightly, but nothing worth worrying about too much so all was well.

When I got it home it seemed that of the 14 gears, only 8 were available. After a few hours of head scratching I figured it must be that the rear dérailleur was broken in some way, or was only meant to be able to shift between 4 of the rear gears. This of course was a wonderful chance to start spending more money!! After a bit more research on gearing for road bikes I decided a good compromise between function and price was the tiagra range. The dérailleur was a 9 speed, so if the rear cassette is upgraded at any point it will be able to cope.

Upon a rather longer test ride is seemed that the brakes were not quite up to scratch. I am used to the XT brakes of my hybrid which are really quiet good, and in comparison the 15 year old setup seems rather lacking. More worryingly however it seemed that the rear brakes was not returning correctly to it's original position after the brakes were applied, it was staying in a if the brake was still on. To remedy this I have purchased a tiagra rear caliper as well as a complete set of new cables for the bike as I think the current ones may have seen better days!

Finally something that was probably not necessary but I wanted to do was to replace the wheels and get a new set of tyres. I managed to pick up a set of Vuelta wheels (the same make as on my hybrid) for next to nothing. I have a feeling they may need some adjustment, but as long as the hubs are running smoothly I will be extremely happy!
