Dorset Dirt 50km off road cycle ride, 13 September 2009!
14.09.2009. 15:21
Well the Dorset Dirt event yesterday (13th September 2009) has been and gone and was very pleasant!
After trying to convince numerous people of how great it would be and failing, I tagged along with the guys from
Dorset Rough Riders as it's always much more enjoyable cycling in a group.
After getting a fellow rough rider from Parkstone we headed up to Dorchester where the event began. It wasn't exactly a prompt start as people were still registering etc well gone 10am, but this wasn't a race it was more of a social ride. As it was off road it is quite hard to describe the route although it can be found on the
Dorset Dirt website.
The first half of the route was by far the toughest. It was very hilly (although still not a patch on the
BHF 66 mile route) and although it had not rained for a few days previously there were still a few sections which were extremely muddy! A lot of the route was quite overgrown as well which meant that there were a few casualties from extreme bramble scratching!!
The second half of the route (after a pub stop!) was a much more civilised affair which started somewhere near to Henley (Dorset) and then came back down to Dorchester. The difference was though that after a few initial hill climbs we got onto a ridge and followed this for the last 4/5 miles all the way back to Dorchester, hence no hills!
All in all though it was thoroughly pleasant, with perfect weather and great to put some faces to some names. Roll on the next ride :)
Ride Time: 4 hours (roughly)
Ride Distance: 50km (off road)
Ride difficulty: Medium / Hard
