Great software for the Garmin Edge 205 and 305
24.04.2009. 12:11
In my quest to become the ultimate cyclist (ahem) I have purchased a second hand
Garmin Edge 205. In typical fashion, before I have even received the unit I am already trying to find
better software for it to create .crs files, as I heard the standard software isn't up to much.
I came across the
www.CourseMapper.com site on my travels round the internet and thought it was worth a post in case anyone is in the same situation as me!
As well as the standard being able to create course files which you can then follow the software actually allows you to overlay other points of interest so that the behaviour is more like that of a 605 / 705 where as opposed to just following a dotted line around the blank screen you are able to see other landmarks etc which you have put onto the map! All very helpful if you don't know the area and are trying a new trail / cycle you have blindly following on
mapmyrun or another such site.
I am not completely dismissing mapmyrun as I think its very stable and has pretty much all the functionality you will need (I will still be mapping out my routes on there and logging them etc). This just adds that extra bit to the somewhat limited Garmin 205 / 305. There is also a fantastic
feature which allows you to compress the routes. I am not sure of exactly how many course points (or whatever you call them) the unit can handle, but the less per route the better surely! At
www.CourseMapper.com you can upload a .crs file which has been created by any software / site and dictate what degree of accuracy in metres you want and it will then compress that file. Just as an example for the
BHF 66 mile bike ride route, the route I had initially mapped out had about 1250 route points. After compressing the route with algorithm C (best but slowest, although only took about 3 seconds), it had compressed it to about 850!! Absolutely brilliant!
