Race Training: 39 mile trip around the purbecks, Dorset

Well, training for the British Heart Foundation 100km race has finally stepped up a gear and the Sunday just gone I completed a lap round Poole Harbour.

Doesn't sound that impressive, but when you then realise that Poole has the largest natural harbour in the world it is a bit of a feat! :)

To begin with I cycled along the road to Sandbanks and got the chain ferry over the harbour entrance. I was going to cycle along the beach to get there but the promenade is normally covered in sand which acts like sandpaper in your chain once it gets in there. Once over the ferry I was in a group of rather professional road cyclist who I kept up with all the way to Studland but then out of no where a huge hill came and I was left trailing somewhat! I think this is where my bike may be a bit of a downfall as it is still quite heavy . A bad workman etc etc though and it is also due to me! The difference I noticed was that in true mountain bike style as I started up the hill and my cadence dropped I started dropping down gears until my cadence was steady and I was ok to get up the hill. This was in contrast to the road bikers who dropped a couple of gears but just got out of their seats and got up the hill this way. This is something I need to start doing! I think as a mountain biker you stay in your seat as much as you can for greater traction, but that is obviously not needed on the road!

Anyhow, after I had got over some monstrous hills it was then pretty much plain sailing along the Swanage road all the way to Wareham. Once through Wareham however I made a bit of an error and opted for the A35 instead of going through Lyttchet Minster. The reason this was an error is because the A35 is more of a motorway than a dual carriage way. Oh well, I'll know for next time. Once off the motorway I dropped down through Poole and then headed through Ashley Heath and then back home.

The exact route can be seen below:
Route for training cycle 22 March 2009

Ride Time: 2 hours 45 Mins
Ride Distance: 62km
Ride difficulty: Medium / Hard

Sorry for being a pedant, but... Poole harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world. Sydney harbour is the first. Still that's a good distance to cover in 2 hours, 45 minutes.
