Yahoo Site Explorer - great SEO development tool!

So - you have done your website deign and now it's time to get it found and noticed, you've heard of 'SEO' but how do you go about implementing this magical technique!?...

In previous articles we have discussed on site SEO - this is the means by which you can construct your website so that Google, Yahoo, Bing and all the other search engines out there can easily access and 'index' your pages so that people may then search on that information.

Taking a slightly different slant from the above 'structure' perspective another important factor is where to publicize your new website. This is where I find Yahoo's site explorer comes in to be very handy. The reason for this is because if you are a website who is just getting started then there will probably be little to no inbound links into your site (unless you have bought a previously used domain name!).

I find that this is always the stumbling block for people as the best website in the world still may never be found by anyone and therefore be pointless! There are a number of 'white hat' SEO techniques to get your site noticed by people and search engines alike, although they take time they are the only guaranteed to increase traffic to your site without risking penalties by all the big search engines for unethical SEO.

The main driver behind any white hat SEO though is that in essence you need to get other sites to link to yours which in effect after a while will see you go higher up the rankings. The reason for this is that they already have traffic and so you in essence want a cut of the people that go to their site. This is where I find site explorer comes into it's own - what you can do is to search for a term that you want to be found on in a search engine, say 'cycling in Dorset' for example. If I put that into Yahoo the top item I get out is 'www.cycledorset.com' I can then goto Yahoo site explorer and after I have signed in, add that site. Once it is in the control panel of site explorer if you then click the 'inlinks' tab you will see a list of all the websites which link into their site, which will be the basis of why they rank so highly!

Yahoo Site Explorer Inlinks

This may not be the best example as I am sure that the fact that their domain name matches the search term also boosts them significantly, but you get the idea! Obviously this technique should not be used to simply try to copy every place that they have links in from, but it is a great idea to get ideas of blogs to comment on (backlinking as you do), directories to add you site to etc.

Remember - SEO won't happen over night but if you take your time and build the foundations up slowly it will pay off and you won't risk being penalised for shady techniques!
